It’s easy to find book rankings on Amazon, or Best Sellers Rank (BSR).
The first step is to choose the book you want to find the ranking for. For our example, let’s use one of my books “50 Stay-At-Home Side Hustles.”
To find the Best Sellers Rank of a book, you have to scroll down past all of the general information to the “Product Details” section. This section tells you the specific details about every book. Toward the bottom of the Product Details section is where you’ll see the Best Sellers Rank.
As you can see, the Best Sellers Rank of a book also details where the book ranks in its top 3 genres. These genres also fluctuate up and down depending on how well your book sells.
How to calculate sales with a Best Sellers Rank
In the example above, it says my book’s BSR is 189,504 in the Kindle Store. For this specific book, its BSR usually fluctuates between 80,000 and 250,000. But how does that translate into a specific number of sales?
You can use a BSR calculator to determine how many sales every month equate to your Best Sellers Rank. After plugging in that same number from before, I took a quick screenshot of the results.
So based on my BSR rank number, I can expect my book to get about 17 sales per month. Of course, this number is completely accurate as sales jump up and down all the time. However, it is a great rough estimate for the number of sales the book might get.
But let’s take a look at a BSR ranking of 190,000 and a much lower BSR, like 6,000. That’s the average BSR for another of my books, “15 Stories 180,000 Views.“ Take a look.
So if we plug that lower BSR number back into the calculator, this is the result we’ll get.
As you can see, there is a massive difference in the number of sales per months between a book that ranks at 6,000 and a book that ranks at 190,000.
What to do with a book’s Best Sellers Rank
Using the BSR of your book or other authors’ books can help you identify how that book is performing. As the name describes, the BSR number fluctuates depending on how well a book is selling. The number gets lower if the book gets more sales and higher if it gets fewer sales. The closer a book gets to 1, the better its Best Sellers Rank is.
I like to use a book’s BSR to spy on my competition. Other authors in similar niches have BSRs and I can view and analyze them to see how many sales they are actually getting. This informs me about how well competing authors are actually doing.
